The Hindu faith is rooted in ancient Vedic philosophy with its inherent ideas of karmic law or the law of retribution–what you sow, you reap; also, what you send out comes back. These ideas dovetail into the Law of Attraction because what you think about most is what you draw into your life experience. Throughout an average day in your life, are you thinking lovingly of the welfare of others or falling into a pattern of criticizing others for everything that makes you unhappy and stressed out? According to the tenets of Hinduism, your thoughts are as powerful as a spoken word. Words, like your actions, are creating your karma and when the elements are ripe for those words and actions to bear fruit (whether good or bad), they will.
Jesus served as a spiritual beacon — “I am come a light into the world . . . that whosoever believeth in me should not abide in darkness” (John 12: 46)–and as exemplar of how the power of God works through the human heart and mind. According to the New Testament Gospels, Jesus performed many miracle that seemingly defied the natural laws of the universe. Among other things, he fed 5,000 people with five loaves and two fishes, exorcised demons, showed a mastery over nature by cursing the fig tree that then withered, raised the dead on three occasions, and healed sick people.
Eve ate the apple and offered some of it to her mate Adam. Some people feel strongly that only God creates and that humans desiring knowledge of universal law and attempting to call upon the Universe to help them manifest or create their lives anew is putting the Universe before God. For some deeply devout Christians, the idea of creating a spiritual or religious life is admirable and credit should be given to the Lord. Others might say that the Lord’s ways are mysterious and the Law of Attraction may be a divine mechanism to give people what they want, including drawing spiritually inspired souls closer to Him.
Many Christians are divided on whether or not the Law of Attraction aligns with Christian beliefs. Those against the Law assert that when people believe that they create their lives and everything in them, they diminish or eliminate God as Creator and practice self-deification. The claim that you can have ultimate knowledge and become godlike is what the serpent promised Eve in the Garden of Eden when tempting her to defy God’s command to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve apparently formed a strong desire to have what the serpent promised her.
Augustine of Hippo was endowed with a great mind and oratory skills, which he used in his service as a bishop in the early Christian church. He successfully manifested a powerful image of himself as an intellectually vibrant and power orator. He made the most of his genetic endowment for intellectual inquiry and oratory and was able to attract the means to further develop them. When Augustine deeply desired to overcome the sensual things of life that kept him from having a more personal relationship with God, he translated his desire into conviction and action. When the Law began to fulfill his desire for that experience, he wrote an intensely personal account of his struggle to come to terms with his sensual nature and to kn
ow God.
Hildegard of Bingen perhaps exemplified the Law of Attraction’s age-old idea that “as you think, so you become.” Some might say that Hildegard’s prodigious works during her lifetime sprang from an inner world in which her thoughts, observations, reflections, and mystical revelation found fecund ground. Her desire to serve the Lord meant following the instructions of a heavenly voice telling her to reveal her knowledge even though her fear of condemnation literally made her ill. Nevertheless, Hildegard worked in tune with her calling and perception of truth — all in alignment with deeply held spiritual beliefs, and the Law of Attraction ensured that her inner contemplative process bore even more fruit. Her desire to serve the Lord meant expressing the knowledge she was being given.
In The Secret, author Rhonda Byrne and her associates advocate seeking prosperity, abundance, inner joy, and peace and counsels that the job of each person is to decide what he or she wants. Mystics have always desired to draw nearer to God and to learn how to express His love to others.
That longing for the Divine has found resonance in the lives of Christian saints from the earliest days of the church. Indeed, the manifestation of the Divine in the physical world is represented by the myriad expressions of divine love. Jesus’ words in the New Testament’s Gospel of John encapsulate the depth of God’s love.
Alignment with the Law of Attraction, for the ancient Australian Aborigines, was alignment and access to the Dreamtime’s energetic realm where they believed all creation takes place. Australian Aborigines were groups of people who migrated from the Asian continent to settle in Australia. Their tribes had various cultural practices but shared a deep reverence and connection to the land. Their view of the world’s beginning was known as the Dreamtime and their shamans or sorcerers placed great emphasis on dreams, sand drawings, and music played upon a didgeridoo, among other instruments.
